Belgian entrepreneurs take big steps toward e-invoicing - courtesy of their accountants

Brussels, May 23, 2025 - With only a good six months to go until the introduction of mandatory electronic invoicing on Jan. 1, 2026, a large-scale survey of 1,679 members of the Institute for Tax Advisors and Accountants (ITAA) reveals that Belgian business owners are making considerable strides toward digital invoicing - under the watchful eye of their accountant or tax advisor.

Nearly 40% of business owners who use an accountant or tax advisor are ready to invoice electronically today. And that trend is accelerating: accountants and tax advisors expect more than 85% of their clients to be ready to make the switch by early 2026.

"We find that our members take their awareness-raising role seriously" says Bart Van Coile, president of the ITAA. "They are the bridge between policy and practice, ensuring that entrepreneurs are not only informed, but also take effective steps."

An industry in flux

These figures show that the digitisation of invoicing is in full swing in Belgium. And this is no coincidence: tax advisors and accountants play a key role in this. They actively guide their clients, inform them of the benefits and obligations, and ensure that the transition is smooth and correct.

  • 66% of offices now have a concrete communication plan to inform clients of the new obligations, 27% will soon roll out a plan
  • 64.5% of accountants and tax advisors have already set up an e-invoicing system for their clients.
  • Confidence is growing: only 5% still experience the transition as "very problematic," while 58.6% see the challenges as manageable.

Strategic partnership with Unifiedpost/Banqup provides concrete solutions

To make this guidance even more powerful, the ITAA already entered into a strategic partnership with Unifiedpost/Banqup in 2017. This partnership offers accountants and tax advisors and their clients access to a reliable, user-friendly and legally compliant e-invoicing solution. The choice of Unifiedpost is based on a combination of practical advantages and fundamental values:

  • Legal retention periods: automatic compliance with obligations (10 + 25 years).
  • Client acceptance: invoices are processed only after explicit (possibly automatic) approval.
  • Respect for professional confidentiality: data is secure and accessible only to authorized parties.
  • Free access to all client invoices.Free professional use of Billtobox for own office (full version).
  • Price guarantee for clients: fixed, transparent fees.
  • Free file transfer when transferring a client to a convener.
  • Full compatibility with all recognized e-invoicing standards, including UBL and other national and international formats.

"We want to provide our members not only with information, but also with concrete tools," Van Coile said. "With Unifiedpost, we have a partner who shares our values and is ready for the future."

Time for action

As of 2026, e-invoicing will become mandatory for B2B transactions in Belgium. Entrepreneurs who have not yet started would do well to take action now. It's simple: anyone who can use a smartphone can create an e-invoice with an approved supplier.

3 steps are sufficient for most SMEs:

  1. Inform yourself via einvoice.belgium.be about the obligation
  2. Create a shortlist after contacting stakeholders (peers, IT vendors, accountant or tax advisor, suppliers, customers,...)
  3. Testing out the shortlist and making a choice

The benefits are clear: less administrative burden, faster payments and better preparation for the future.

E-invoicing is no longer a distant dream - it is a reality under construction. Thanks to the expert guidance of Belgian accountants and tax advisors, business owners are better prepared today than ever. The future of invoicing is digital - and it starts now.
