In our digital age, business communications and transactions are evolving rapidly. Leading this change is Peppol, a network that enhances electronic document exchange. In this series of blogs, we will dive deep into the meaning of Peppol and its revolutionary impact on modern businesses. Let's start by answering the question, "What exactly is Peppol?"
Peppol: An Introduction
Peppol, stands for "Pan-European Public Procurement Online," is a dedicated network for the secure electronic transmission of documents, especially invoices. It originated from a collaboration between the European Commission and 18 governments between 2008 and 2012 and its main goal is to simplify interactions between the public, private and supplier domains.
Peppol has its European roots but has since grown internationally. Its growing reputation as the preferred platform for exchanging invoices positions it as a potential global industry standard.
At its core, Peppol champions unified communications. By using shared standards and protocols, the network enables smooth document exchange, eliminating cumbersome data translations or system modifications.
Who uses Peppol?
Currently, 38 countries have joined OpenPeppol, allowing companies in these locations to easily exchange documents internationally. While European countries such as Belgium, Germany, France and the United Kingdom are participating, non-European countries such as Singapore and Australia are also joining the movement.
How does Peppol work?
The Peppol network uses certified access points that act as intermediaries between senders and receivers of electronic documents. Companies within the Peppol framework securely send and receive documents through these access points, ensuring that data is exchanged in a secure, controlled manner.
Maximizing the benefits of Peppol
By Jan. 1, 2026, Belgium will require all companies to adopt e-invoicing, highlighting Europe's evolving financial standards. Using networks such as Peppol promises standardization and efficiency. As our blog series will highlight, Peppol's benefits align with the new Belgian mandate, urging companies to adapt for improved operational efficiency. A customer who wants to invoice the Flemish or Brussels governments must already provide electronic invoices that go over the OpenPeppol network.
Billtobox is an Access Point to the Peppol network, meaning Billtobox can be used to send electronic invoices over the Peppol network.
